Thanks Community! :)

Thanks Community! :)

Hello everyone!

I feel like I'm having a dance revival and figured I'd share with y'all!

When I started dancing I began because I am not the most socially adept person in the world.  I went to college in a "big city" (Youngstown Ohio) to make my way as a performer.  After arriving at college I realized I may have been a bit sheltered, I did not immediately fit in with my peers, it took time to build friendships and those fun quirky people I met in Marching Band started inviting me to the dance club.

After about 6 months I gave in to their peer pressure and decided to give it a try.

My first dance class at YSU was Cha Cha, and after dancing with the instructor for 2 minutes I determined I had found a passion.  The communication without words, the acceptance in movement, the physical touch with no threat or discomfort, the respect of partnership and working together all spoke volumes to me.  I was hooked.

From that point forward, no matter where else I was or what else I was doing I found a dance community and met other people who loved communicating, sharing, and moving together.  Creating art together and sharing joy with one another.

As I entered the ballroom industry I felt out of place, not the MOST coordinated, not the fastest learner, not the skinniest, not the sexiest, not the most balanced, not the most flexible, and definitely not used to being a makeup covered and manicured nail model.  However, I did still get to inspire people and share my love for dance!  Everywhere I went people were excited to be included and get the same feeling I did when I started, enjoying movement, touch, acceptance, respect and communication without the burden of small-talk.

We opened The Crystal Ballroom 7 years ago in December, since that time I have been learning, developing and growing to recognize the importance of what I first experienced.  I love dancing with people, to share a moment, acceptance, respect, and communication!  Yes, it is fun to dress up and be a model for a day, but it is more fun to teach, to improve, to hone communication (lead/follow) skills, AND let go of all the rules and have a conversations through dance.  Dance is a place to feel accepted and create something with another human to music.

I don't know how relatable this story is, but I guess after going on a week-long vacation I missed this part of my life.  When I got back, I had about 5 people ask me if it was hard to get back to work, and I can honestly say that I was so excited to be back to dance with you all, teach lessons, and collaborate with instructors!  Sharing dance with others is a gift that makes every one of my days brighter!  Thank you all for continuing to believe in what we do and offer at The Crystal Ballroom!

With that being said, we have events here to include everyone in! David and I curate all of the experiences at The Crystal Ballroom to include as many people as possible, to show love to y'all, to help create inclusion and acceptance!  Join us at these upcoming events...
